The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District has declared 2025 a "historic year" for air quality in the region. The district, which covers eight central California counties, said every monitoring site across the Valley recorded air pollution levels below the federal threshold of 35.4 micrograms per cubic meter. This achievement reflects more than a single year of favorable conditions and is attributed to decades of coordinated action by Valley residents, businesses, farmers, agencies, and community groups. Only 5% of days in 2025 exceeded air pollution federal health standards, a significant decline from 25% in 2012. The report highlighted the persistent challenge of wildfire smoke in the county.
