Bitcoin developer says 5.6 million ‘lost’ tokens may need freezing to stop hackers

Bitcoin developer, Jameson Lopp, has suggested that 5.6 million 'lost' tokens may need to be frozen to prevent future quantum hackers from obtaining them. While he does not want to freeze anyone's bitcoin, he believes removing dormant tokens from potential circulation may be safer for the network. This follows the release of BIP-361, a proposal by Lopp and others that suggests phasing out bitcoin’s current cryptographic signatures and potentially freezing transactions from quantum-vulnerable wallets. The dormant tokens, which are currently worth roughly $420 billion, if ever recovered through advances in quantum computing, could introduce significant volatility and undermine confidence in the original crypto network. While no formal vote has taken place on this proposal, similar upgrades have required overwhelming support from miners to activate.
