The Pierce County Sheriff's Office has deactivated its Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) system, or Flock cameras, in response to the "Driver Privacy Act" passed by the Washington State Legislature. The law prohibits the use of license plate readers in proximity to community locations, including hospitals, schools, and other protected areas, and could result in a gross misdemeanor for individual officers. The department stated that continuing to use the ALPR would put its deputies at risk of unintentionally violating state law. Additionally, the department acknowledged concerns about privacy and the potential use of such technologies in relation to federal immigration enforcement.
