India's parliament has passed a controversial bill that seeks to redefine the definition of transgender identity and their right to self-identify. The government claims these changes will make welfare benefits more accessible and strengthen the existing law against exploitation and trafficking. However, critics argue that the bill could exclude many transgender, non-binary and gender-fluid individuals. The bill removes the right to identify individuals and limits recognition to those with specific biological or physical traits. A Supreme Court-appointed advisory panel has urged the government to withdraw the bill, stating that the changes violate the 2014 ruling by the Supreme Court.
