Sheldon H. Jacobson: Privatizing security at our nation’s airports is useful and necessary

President Donald Trump has proposed privatizing airport security at smaller airports, a recommendation outlined in Project 2025. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has a program in place that allows airports to apply for private companies for airport security screening. The contractors are vetted by the TSA and their employees undergo the same training as TSA officers. The union representing TSA officers, the American Federation of Government Employees, argues that returning to such an environment could pose security risks. However, Jacobson argues that this does not mean aviation security should be privatized. He argues that the cost of TSA officers is around $120 million per week and that the TSA's role as the overseer of aviation security is critical to keeping national airspace safe.
