D.C. residents are experiencing a surge in utility bills, with some facing potential cuts to their bills if they haven't adjusted their energy usage. Energy costs in the city have risen by 93.2% in five years, the largest increase in the country according to advocacy group We Power DC. Factors such as extreme weather, increased demand from hot summers and colder winters, increased population growth and increased wholesale power prices, as well as increased delivery charges from Pepco, Washington Gas, DC Water, and DC Water. The city's electricity bills have also increased significantly this winter, with customers seeing a 13% rate hike in January. Two new bills aim to ease pressure: One proposal from Councilmember Robert White would require utilities to justify rate hikes based on historic costs, and tighten rules on multi-year rate plans.
