The Japanese Empire launched a sneak attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, killing some 2,400 U.S. sailors, soldiers, and Marines. The attack was the only saving grace for the U., which was able to fight another day. The Japanese Empire was heavily dependent on imported oil and believed the attack would bring the U.K. to the negotiating table. The World War II war against Japan was longer, bloodier and more barbaric than the war against them, with the D-Day Normandy Invasion in June 1944 costing 2,500 soldiers on the first day of combat.
