HDR TV Formats Explained

Nearly all new TVs and projectors have the ability to decode high dynamic range (HDR) video, although this quality can vary depending on the display's ability to handle the extra data. There are multiple HDR formats, including Dolby Vision, DolbyVision 2, HDR10, HDR 10 Plus and HLG, but most displays can only decode one or two of these. However, all displays can play HDR content, not always in the best format available. To get the most out of HDR, you need content designed for it. The most recent example of HDR10 is about as close to a universal standard as we've got, but its main limitation is its static metadata, which can only be applied to an entire movie or show. Despite this, there are certain fees for use of Dolbyvision Plus, which are less expensive than what Dolby charges for Dolby vision.
