With his first album in 10 years, Mulatu Astatke, 81-year-old Ethiopian musician and father of Ethio jazz, has released Mulatu Plays Mulatu, which includes Latin jazz, funk and Afrobeat. The album was recorded in London and Addis Ababa and aims to introduce Ethiopian music to the world, highlighting the contributions of African musicians who have contributed to modern music and laid the foundation for jazz, blues, and gospel music. Astatake also mentioned his intention to promote African cultural instruments, such as the masenqo, zummara, and the clarinet.
