Fifth-seeded St. John’s hit its most 3-pointers since Jan. 12 in a 79-53 victory over No. 12 Northern Iowa in an East Region opening-round game. The Red Storm, who entered the game shooting only 33.2 percent from 3-point range, were hot early, making seven in the first half. They also held Northern Iowa to only 3-for-14 shooting from distance. Coach Rick Pitino expressed his desire for more 3s from Aziyah Sellers, but also expressed frustration over his lack of open shots. The win equaled St.John’s second-largest NCAA Tournament win, a 30-point victory over Omaha.
