Despite not being a standout defensively or base-running, Mayer impressed with his versatile defense. Despite a poor season for him offensively, he was deemed a strong contender. The Red Sox were determined to push him to earn his position during the offseason. Manager Alex Cora praised Mayer's work and expressed excitement about his potential for the Opening day roster. With the selection of Mayer, the team's Opening Day lineup includes Caleb Durbin, Trevor Story, and Willson Contreras.
