Search warrants for social media companies, renaming a holiday and more from the Colorado legislature this week
Published on April 4, 2026.
The Colorado legislature is considering new financial regs, including a bill that defines the "earned-wage access" industry as a credit product that can be taken out of future earnings. This comes as lawmakers consider whether a paycheck advance is a loan, or if it violates a law passed by Colorado voters to crack down on payday lenders. The typical $3.50 fee for a $50 advance translates to an annual interest rate of 365%, which would be 10 times the limit set by Colorado voter in 2018. The bill passed both the Senate and House unanimously and requires large social media platforms to comply with search warrants within 72 hours and to create streamlined processes for law enforcement to file search warrants. Colorado also renames César Chávez Day in honor of farmworkers.
