Ibogaine, a psychedelic medication derived from the Iboga shrub found in Central and West Africa, has shown some promise in treating opioid addiction, but limited published research has been limited due to its illegal status in many countries as it is illegal in the U.S. The Trump administration has ordered federal agencies to make psychedelic drugs more available for research and use in the treatment. However, there is some evidence ibogaine may help people quit opioids long-term, but no available research has shown rates of long-distance abstinence from opioids as high as those claimed by podcaster Joe Rogan. Despite small, observational studies showing promising results, experts believe more research is needed.
