A jury in Adams County, Ohio, has sided with rapper Afroman in a civil defamation suit brought against him by seven Adams County Sheriff’s deputies who claimed they were harmed by his use of surveillance footage in music videos mocking their 2022 raid on his property. The verdict came after a two-day trial where Afroman, whose given name is Joseph Foreman, invoked his First Amendment rights and financial necessity to defend the music videos. The deputies, who accused him of defamation, invasion of privacy, and intentional infliction of emotional distress, had been seeking millions in damages. Foreman claimed that the police raid was their fault, and that he had the First Amendment right to use the surveillance footage from his own home. The ACLU backed Afroman's defense, backed by the American Civil Liberties Union.
