Team USA lost 3-2 to Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic title game, with several stars so emotional they yanked their silver medals off their neck before returning to the locker room. The team had only been together for two weeks but bonded quickly in Arizona and Houston before reaching Miami. The loss was particularly painful as they produced just three hits against six different Venezuelan pitchers and scored only four runs in the last 21 innings of the tournament. USA designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, who struck out three times, said it was a "hurt" to not expect to win a baseball game when you walk out of the room. USA manager Mark DeRosa was told by the San Diego Padres that he couldn't use closer in this game unless it was in a save situation, and Venezuela was using the same rules as three teams instructing him. Despite the loss, the loss was not to blame for the team's poor performance.
