Aardvarks in South Africa have been observed displaying unusual behavior during the daytime, suggesting an ecological imbalance due to rising temperatures. The change is seen as a sign of concern for a nocturnal animal that normally comes out after sunset to forage for ants and termites. This shift in behavior is due to research done at the University of the Witwatersrand in the Kalahari that when temperatures become too high and the ground too dry, termites and ants reduce their activities and relocate further underground to escape the heat. This means that aardvaks are no longer consuming enough food or water, leading to an inability to regulate body temperature. The conservation team at Buffelsdrift will continue monitoring the aard varks through a camera trap program.
