Apple has defeated a bill proposed by Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) to restrict the promotion of its own apps in the App Store. The BASED Act aims to prevent platforms with a market cap above $1 trillion and at least 100 million monthly users in the U.S. from pushing users towards their own offerings. However, smaller app makers, who supported the bill, were unable to overcome Apple and Google's greater resources. The trade group Chamber of Progress, both companies partnered with Apple, prioritised defeating the bill as its top priority for the coming year. Apple has been known for its political activities, spending $1.56m on political lobbying in three months.
