OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has publicly apologised for his company's failure to alert law enforcement about the online activities of Jesse Van Rootselaar, the mass shooter who killed eight people in a mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia on February 10. The tech firm had suspended the ChatGPT account in June for misuse, resulting in its suspension. However, it did not inform law enforcement as Rootsellaar's usage of the chatbot did not meet the threshold of posing a credible threat of harm. Altman acknowledged the failure to have alerted law enforcement to the suspension and pledged to work with all levels of government to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
