Here are the safest small cars for 2026. And they're all under $30K

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has awarded seven small cars with its top safety designations for 2026, including four with the highest "Top Safety Pick+" award and three with the "top Safety Pick" rating. SUVs dominated the overall awards, reflecting the U.S. market's shift towards larger vehicles. IIHS President David Harkey urged carmakers to improve safety across all types of vehicles. The USA TODAY Cars team compiled a list of the safest small cars under $30K.
