NJ Man Convicted Of Murdering Family Will Not Get A New Trial, Judge Rules

Paul Caneiro, a 59-year-old man convicted of murdering his brother, Keith, wife, and children in their home in Ocean Township, New Jersey, before setting it on fire. His defense attorneys, Monika Mastellone and Andy Murray, filed a motion for a new trial claiming that the judge, Marc C. Lemieux, had denigrated them both in and out of the jury's presence, denying him a fair trial. However, prosecutors argued that Caineiro did receive a free trial and that the court's actions were consistent with the state's rules and the Rules of Evidence. In a written opinion filed by Lemieaux, the judge ruled that a fresh trial based on an alleged denigration of defense counsel before the jury is not warranted.
