Brian Cole, the man charged with planting pipe bombs near the Republican National Committee and Democratic National Committee headquarters in 2021, has argued that he should be covered under President Donald Trump's blanket pardon of Jan. 6 defendants. His lawyers maintain his innocence but argue that if he did place the pipe bombs, the president's pardon would cover his alleged actions. They argue that Cole was motivated by grievances about the 2020 presidential election and that his actions were directly related to the congressional certification of the 2020 election. Cole was arrested on Dec. 4 and charged with transporting an explosive device and attempted malicious destruction by means of explosive materials. A judge ordered Cole to remain detained ahead of his trial, citing an autism diagnosis.
