Oahu flooding: Evacuations continue as downpours, landslides close major roads

Hawaiian officials are warning residents of Oahu’s North Shore that they may be stuck due to flash floods, sinkholes and landslides that threaten to disrupt major roads. The National Weather Service predicts that as much as 10 inches of rain has fallen on parts of the island since Thursday night, with an additional 2 to 4 inches expected over the next 24 hours. The heavy rainfall has caused flooding, causing evacuation orders for about 10,000 residents on the North Shore and causing major road closures. The Wahiawa Dam, which officials have warned could collapse if the water surpasses its highest point, reached an all-time record of 85.3 feet, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. No fatalities were reported as of Friday night. The entire island remained under a flash flood warning, with the entire island under a flood warning. Three of the Hawaii Board of Water Supply's wastewater facilities overflowing due to the influx of water, and it is hoped to restore water service Saturday morning.
