Katie Pladl, then 18 years old, reconnected with her biological parents, Steven and Alyssa Pladll, after reaching out when she was 18. She reunited with them in 2016 and moved into their Virginia home. However, she was discovered to be pregnant with Steven's child with Katie. The couple had been involved in an incestuous relationship and had given her up for adoption when Steven allegedly turned abusive. They were arrested on charges of incest in North Carolina in 2018 and after being released on bond, Katie moved back with her adoptive parents and ended her relationship with Steven. Steven murdered his and Katie's infant son on April 11, 2018. He then tracked down Katie and her adoptive father in Connecticut and fatally shot both of them. The true story of Katie's murder was depicted in the Lifetime movie, which hit Netflix in 2026.
