Oklahoma AG Drummond urges Congress to crack down on xylazine mixed with fentanyl
Published on April 3, 2026.
Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond has urged Congress to pass legislation targeting xylazine, a powerful animal tranquilizer that authorities say is being mixed with illegal fentanyl. The Combating Illicit Xylazine Act, proposed to be classified as a controlled substance, would give federal agencies more authority to track and limit its distribution. The drug, known as "tranq", is not approved for human use and is often used to intensify sedation and extend the effects of fentanyl. However, experts warn that this combination could pose additional dangers in overdose situations as it does not respond to opioid reversal drugs like naloxone.
