A cyclist was killed in a hit-and-run accident at a Carlisle intersection in Albuquerque, New Mexico, prompting renewed calls for safer streets. The driver, 26-year-old Gilbert Nunez-Guzman, was seen briefly stopping and fleeing the scene. Cyclist advocacy group BikeABQ's President, Patrick Martin, expressed concern over proposed budget cuts to jobs related to road improvements, including a position connected to the city’s Vision Zero initiative. Martin also highlighted a culture of not taking traffic safety seriously in New Mexico. Melinda Montoya, whose daughter was killed riding her bike last year, said the crash was a reminder of the city's problems with road safety.
