On a key House committee, Republicans and Democrats clashed over GOP efforts to investigate Medicaid fraud. Republicans on the House Energy and Commerce Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee claimed that these investigations are not politically motivated. Democrats argued that Republicans' efforts to combat Medicaid fraud have largely targeted blue states and are a smokescreen to distract from the more than $1 trillion in Medicaid cuts included in the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has also launched separate inquiries into Medicaid fraud in several blue states, including California, Maine and New York. The agency has moved to cut off $2 billion in future Medicaid payments to Minnesota for failing to fight fraud, and will withhold $243 million in payments unless the state can prove they are not fraudulent. The hearing will also hear complaints from doctors and hospitals, which many believe are to blame for American health cost struggles.
