Google and Microsoft reported strong Q1 2026 earnings, with Google Search & Other revenue rising 19% year over year to $60.4 billion. However, the "Network" segment, which includes AdSense, AdMob, and Google Ad Manager, is a financial indicator tied to ads outside of Google's surfaces. This has been seen as a significant decline for publishers and app developers relying on Google-brokered ads more than it hinders Search revenue growth. The IAB/PwC Internet Advertising Revenue Report found that U.S. programmatic advertising grew 20.5% in 2025 to $162.4bn, while Google's Google Network line did not. While Google's revenue mix suggests an ecosystem shifting inward, Microsoft is focusing on user acquisition to prove its AI bets are paying off. The decline in Google Network does not match the overall digital ad market.
