Today in Chicago History: Mayor Richard M. Daley orders Meigs Field shut down

On March 30, 1981, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley ordered Meigs Field to shut down following the shooting of President Ronald Reagan. The son of a wealthy Denver oil executive, John Hinckley Jr., who was also wounded and injured Reagan's Press Secretary, James Brady, and Secret Service agent Timothy McCarthy, both of whom later became police chief of Orland Park. The shooting led to the creation of a gun law, known as the "Brady bill," which required a mandatory five-day waiting period for the purchase of handguns and background checks for potential gun buyers. Hinickley was sentenced to a mental hospital for more than two decades after a jury found him not guilty by reason of insanity in the shooting.
