An NCAA committee is reportedly moving towards a recommendation that the start of the season for all teams from late August to late August, or Week 0, could happen as soon as the 2027 campaign. This move would require approval from the NCAA football oversight committee. This comes amid ongoing debate over the future of the College Football Playoff. The change would not necessarily end the season sooner than Thanksgiving, but could allow some years where the season began on Labor Day weekend depending on how many weeks back it is from Thanksgiving. The current 12-team field will remain in place for the upcoming 2026 campaign, with the SEC and Big Ten discussing future 16- or 24-team formats.
