Study: Pacific Northwest needs to prepare for extreme heat events

A study by the Northwest Climate Adaptation Science Center has suggested that state and local officials in Washington and its neighboring states could do more to prepare for major heat waves driven by climate change. The study, led by researcher Eva Colberg, found that the record-breaking 2021 event resulted in more than 200 deaths and significant environmental damage. The National Weather Service estimates that the heat also caused significant damage to roads and sidewalks, power lines, and glaciers.
