Metro Police in Las Vegas has opened its doors to explain the 287(G) immigration program at the Clark County Detention Center to address misconceptions about the partnership with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) through the program. The detention center is the only place Metro partners with ICE through this program. Metro's Sgt. Karina De Lara stated that the program only begins after someone is already in custody and only begins when someone is in custody. The only officers certified to serve warrants from ICE are corrections staff. Currently, there are 25 officers at the detention center trained to serve ICE warrants. Critics have argued that even a jail-based partnership can still have ripple effects outside the facility, particularly if immigrant families fear a local arrest could turn into an immigration case.
