New extreme heat strategy aims to shield Southern Nevada’s most vulnerable commuters

The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) has launched a plan to fortify the region's infrastructure against extreme heat. The initiative is funded by a $750,000 grant through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which aims to prepare the region for future crises and weather events. The RTC has already implemented measures, including expanding its bus fleet, diversifying its shelter options and launching a public awareness campaign each summer urging riders to plan, stay hydrated, and prepare for high-heat days. However, the challenge ahead is steep as temperatures rise, with extreme heat causing vehicles to overheat, drain lines, and road closures. Michelle Deatrick, founder and chair of the Democratic National Committee's Council on the Environment and Climate Crisis, highlighted that rising temperatures are taking a significant toll on the population.
