Senator Elissa Slotkin, a Michigan Democrat on the Armed Services Committee, has introduced a bill in the Senate to regulate the Pentagon's use of AI technology, aiming to codify existing Defense Department guidelines into law. The bill would ensure that AI cannot autonomously decide to kill a target and cannot be used to aid in mass surveillance on Americans. It also prohibits the use of the technology for launching or detonating a nuclear weapon. These concerns arose during a recent dispute with AI giant Anthropic, which has been involved in the military's ongoing battle with Iran. Slotkin believes her legislation could have prevented this dispute, which could cost taxpayers an enormous amount of money.
