The Southington Town Council has decided not to proceed on a $86.7 million elementary school facilities plan, which would close schools, build new ones, and redraw district lines. The proposal involves construction of a new Kelley Elementary School, an expansion, and closing Flanders Elementary School for municipal use. However, there was disagreement over the cost, timing, and school closures. Some residents argued that delaying the project would increase costs and prolong existing facility issues. The plan relies on bonding and anticipated state reimbursement of up to 65 percent. The council concluded a marathon public hearing on the bonding but postponed further action.
