ODU shooting: What we know about the suspect, victims and investigation
Published on March 13, 2026.
The shooting at Old Dominion University (ODU) is being investigated as an act of terrorism. The shooter, 36-year-old Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, was identified as a former Virginia Army National Guard soldier who pleaded guilty in 2016 to attempting to aid the Islamic State extremist group, also known as ISIS. He reportedly used a gun with an "obliterated serial number," potentially complicating the investigation into how he obtained the firearm. The victim, Lt. Col. Brandon Shah, was an alumnus of the university and a decorated military veteran who served several tours in the Middle East. The two people injured are members of the school’s Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. No evidence suggests the attack was connected to the ongoing Iran-US war.
