Former president AMLO calls on Mexicans to donate money for Cuba in rare public message

Former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has urged Mexicans to donate to a non-governmental organization, Humanidad con América Latina, to help the people of Cuba. This is in response to a U.S. blockade on oil shipments to Cuba, which has led to extreme hardship for the Cuban people. The former president, AMLO, made repeated calls for the United States to lift its embargo on Cuba and declared that Cuba is an “example of resistance” and should be declared a World Heritage site. The newspaper La Jornada published an editorial announcing the creation of the bank account to collect donations for food, medicine, oil and gasoline. Some online reaction was mixed, with some praising AMLO for bringing attention to the plight of Cuban people and others questioning his lackadais.
