The Oregon Legislature has secured $2 million in funding to buy Abiqua Falls, a 92-foot waterfall that has been owned by the Mount Angel Abbey for nearly a century. The abbey has allowed public access to the waterfall but has not maintained the area. The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department will be tasked with purchasing the land once Gov. Tina Kotek signs off on the bill. The initial cost could reach more than $4 million and potentially reach as high as $8.2 million. The area is notoriously dangerous and dangerous, with drivers frequently getting stuck on the road and the trail. The $600,000 funding set aside is for land deals, with another $1.4 million for a neighboring 140-acre parcel owned by Weyerhaeuser.
