The first grunion run of the year is expected on the Southern California coast, including Santa Monica. The fish, which measure six to eight inches in length, are found only in Southern California and northern Baja California. They are known for their digging in the sand during mating season. The female grunion lays about 3,000 eggs at once, and the male grunion fertilizes them. The grunion mating season ends in the summer.
