The state House has voted to advance legislation that would give Connecticut more independence from the federal government to set vaccine standards. While state House Democrats voted for the bill, all Republicans voted against it. The legislation would allow the public health commissioner to set standards based on recommendations from medical groups like the American Academy of Pediatrics. This comes as the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has reduced the number of recommended childhood vaccinations and allows the state to continue buying vaccines and require them to be insured. Republicans are against this part of the legislation, focusing instead on updating an old state law regarding the state's ban on religious vaccine exemptions in public schools.
