The Department of Homeland Security (ICE) has purchased a 24.9-acre warehouse near Salt Lake City International Airport for $145 million. This move sets up a clash between Utah City leaders and state and federal officials, who have pushed for a detention facility. The warehouse purchase reflects ICE's $45 billion strategy to increase detention capacity nationwide by purchasing and converting commercial properties into holding sites. The site is expected to bring almost 10,000 jobs to the area. Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson and Mayor Erin Mendenhall have criticized the use of a warehouse facility for this purpose, stating it is outside the scope of their available resources and zoning allowances.
