The New York City Council hearing was held on a controversial Delivery Protection Act, which critics argue could lead to thousands of job losses and significantly increase delivery bills. The bill would require companies like Amazon, FedEx, DHL, FreshDirect and other businesses that operate distribution centers and deliver packages to be licensed by the city's Department of Consumer and Worker Protection. It would also require those companies to directly employ their own delivery workers instead of hiring subcontractors. Critics argue that this could result in job losses, and increase New Yorkers’ yearly delivery bills by $664. Amazon, which accounts for one third of the last-mile delivery industry in the city, submitted testimony saying the bill would threaten its partners and the jobs of over 40 local businesses. The Teamsters union is among the most vocal supporters of the bill, calling Amazon's business model "dangerous" and "built on corporate greed".
