Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York City has pushed a combined $23B worth of new taxes in just his first 100 days in office, despite his campaign promise to only increase taxes on the rich. The new taxes, which would cover a budget shortfall estimated to be $12 billion, were pushed into account for a potential budget shortfall of $5.4 billion. Mammani also threatened an across-the-board nearly 10% property tax increase citywide if he didn't get his “tax the rich” wish, and accused City Council Speaker Julie Menin of preferring to support cuts to city services rather than supporting his tax schemes. Despite Gov. Kathy Hochul's stance against soaking the rich, Democratic leaders in the state Assembly and Senate have supported Mamdanian's push in their budget proposals, but it remains unclear if these will survive ongoing negotiations.
