Faculty, staff strike looms at Portland Community College

The faculty and support staff at Portland Community College are set to go on strike after months of negotiations over salary and health care benefits. The unions are seeking cost of living raises of between 6.5% and 8.75% over the remaining two years of their contracts. They have questioned why the college's leaders won't use emergency funds to meet their demands. The college has offered a $500 one-time bonus to every union employee if ratified, but also has sought increased monthly contributions from employees to pay for health benefits from between $50 and $275 per month.
