PPS students set to have 3 fewer days at school this spring, as teachers approve furlough plans

The last day of school for Portland Public Schools students will be June 5, following teachers' approval of a plan to take four furlough days to help offset a $14 million budget shortfall. The agreement, which still requires approval from school board members, will result in three fewer days of school being shut down. The district may still require other reductions to help address the shortfall. School will not be in session and teachers will not receive paydays on May 1, June 9, and June 10. The $14m shortfall is largely due to unexpected costs during the school year, including major maintenance issues or falling revenues from local property taxes, as well as rising school attendance rates.
