The United States and Iran are set to hold peace talks in Islamabad, Pakistan, in 2026. This is the first direct U.S.-Iranian meeting in over a decade and could determine the fate of a two-week ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for about 20% of global energy supplies. The talks were reportedly concluded after 14 hours and technical experts from both sides would exchange documents. Negotiations will continue despite some remaining differences, but no date was set for when they would resume.
