The future of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is uncertain due to the impending departure of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Both Noem and President Trump have been working to significantly reshape the agency, with many of the most contentious changes so far being Noem's policy of personally reviewing expenditures of over $100,000. A recent lawsuit alleges that the Trump administration is taking steps to cut FEMA staff, including not renewing employment for its Cadre of On-Call Response/Recovery Employees. While Noem may still be able to set the recommendations for reform, it may be up to Trump's pick to replace her, Sen. Markwayne Mullin, to oversee implementation. Critics of the administration's policies remain skeptical, with some believing it will take a decade to rebuild FEMA from the damage Noem has caused.
