Lawmakers in D.C. are debating the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, or SAVE Act, which would require proof of citizenship to be eligible for voting. Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs (D-Washington) has expressed concerns about the potential cost of the bill and potential disenfranchising voters. The bill also requires photo ID while voting in person and requires someone voting by mail to send a copy of their ID in with their ballot. Hobbs estimates that this will cost the state an additional $35.7-$39.3 million to run the upcoming midterm election.
