Apple's $600 MacBook Neo, the best budget laptop we've tested, is causing PC makers to panic due to its limited RAM and storage capabilities. Asus' CFO, Nick Wu, stated that all PC vendors, including Microsoft, Intel, and AMD, are taking the MacBook Neo seriously. The company acknowledged that the specs had some limitations, including the non-upgradable 8GB of unified memory and limited 256GB of base storage. While PC makers have generally standardized around 16GB of RAM, rising costs of memory may prevent them from doing so. The increasing prices for laptops are also not helping make budget PC laptops more attractive. While Apple owns the majority of its tech stack, PC makers still have to source most components from elsewhere. The MacBook Neo uses an A18 Pro chip, which outperforms low-end Intel Core 5 CPUs and even Apple's M1 MacBook Air from five years ago.
