Public health officials are searching for people who may have come in contact with bats found in Escondido, which tested positive for rabies. The first bat was discovered near the White Oak Villas condo complex and retrieved by the San Diego Humane Society. The second bat was found at the SanDiego Zoo Safari Park, not a park habitat. Public health officer Dr. Sayone Thihalilopavan warned that rabies can be transmitted through a bite or when bat saliva comes into contact with a cut, scrape, or the eyes, nose or mouth. Those who come in direct contact with the bat are urged to wash the affected area thoroughly and receive medical advice immediately.
