The EU Picks Up USAID's Slack In Funding Foreign Election NGOs Across Europe

The European Union (EU) is funding nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) accused of working to discredit right-wing election observers ahead of Hungary's tight election. The leftist NGOs had raised concerns about election fraud and discredited Republican international election observers before Serbia's March elections had even taken place. The EU has increased its funding to USAID, which is under contract for $3.4 million from the United States. The Centre for Research, Transparency and Accountability (CRTA), which is still under contract with USAID and lists the EU as a past donor on its website, criticised the tactics used by these groups. American observers, Jake Hoffman, who has been labeled as a "fake observer by the European Platform for Democratic Elections (EPDE), and Nemanja Zavišić, claimed these NGOs were taking statements from "domestic opposition liberal observers" at face value.
